Advice for Small Business in the Construction Industry

SHEARTECH Ltd – the Contractors Coach

Small businesses generally, and those in the construction industry in particular, are always under pressure for time and resources. We have demanding clients and deadlines to meet. Understandably this means we can often leave behind some of the important paperwork that accompanies being a small business in order to meet those deadlines and satisfy our clients.

As we usually end up in our own SME because we have a craft, skill or certain training, it doesn’t mean that we also enjoy the ever-expanding demands that stem from running that business. Sometimes if it doesn’t play to our strengths, we ignore it in the hope it might go away….if only!

As the Contractors Coach, I can offer advice and training in the areas that may be outside your comfort zone, such as:

  • Contracts; what’s included?
  • Health & Safety – Safety Statements, Method Statements
  • Programming projects
  • The Tender Pre-Qualification Process
  • Project Management – relevant records
  • Variations – when to claim, how to claim
  • Dispute avoidance
  • Accounting systems – costing projects

My formal education includes a BComm Degree from UCD prior to entering the construction industry. Over 30 years spent with a main contracting company has provided me with a vast learning experience across many aspects of the industry. I try to take a problem-solving attitude to my work. For many years I have held Managing Safely in Construction (MSIC) and Project Supervisor for the Construction Stage (PSCS) qualifications and I am currently completing a Project Management Diploma in Trinity College in support of the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I plan to run occasional 30-minute webinars on the topics above for interested Members of The National Guild of Mastercraftsmen and would love to hear from you about what areas are most relevant.
